Week 16 Summary

The Battle for Second was indeed a battle. Only two survived. It is tough to pick a winner after the best 15 teams are off the board. Say goodbye to Mike Boggs (last year's co-champion), Paul Buckley, Hillary Davidson, Cairo Marsh, George and Doris Melissinos (sharing a pick as DoGe), George Melissinos, Jeremy Tucker, and Judy Williams.

A few interesting notes from week 16:

Mike Boggs went undefeated last year and lasted into week 16 this year. I can't remember anyone going 31-2 in 33 weeks. Great job Mike!

Three entries were riding the default all year and they were eliminated. The default pick has never lasted this long. Paul Buckley, Hillary Davidson and Cairo Marsh almost had a piece of the pie. But, as proven true in every prior year, riding the default did not produce a pay out.

Finally, George Melissinos was undefeated through 14 weeks and then picked two consecutive losers to come up empty. A good effort, but not enough.

Two remain alive for second, Sam Heermans and Leo Kourkoulos.

Week 15 Summary

There were 5 losers this weekend. George Melissinos dropped into the Second Place bracket when SF upset SEA.

Four others were knocked out of the contest. Say goodbye to me (15 weeks is my record), my Mom, Randy Swigor, and Bobby Edmiston. This group lost with SEA or NO.

Ten remain in contention for Second Place with two weeks remaining in the season.

2007 Champion: Mike Gilbert

Mike Gilbert won it all this past weekend. He picked GB to beat DET and that clinched it for him when his nearest competitor lost with SEA. An ironic twist? Mike lives in Seattle and he managed to ignored the Seahawks.

I met Mike a few years back when he was employed as a consultant by Royal Caribbean. He was part of the team that selected the company I worked for as Royal Caribbean's loyalty program database provider. Mike continued to work with me for a few years as the Royal Caribbean database was developed and implemented.

We've managed to stay in touch over the years with an email or phone call "what are you doing now". This year I again invited Mike to play King of the Hill and he said "yes" after a two year hiatus. No wonder he took two years off, he lost in week one in both 2002 and 2003. In 2001 Mike lasted into the top 12 but lost in week nine. The lesson is...don't be discourage if you lost early this year.

Mike will receive $1510 just in time for the Christmas holiday (the $10 is a refund for the Second Place bracket where he is no longer eligible).

Week 14 Summary

Not much to report this week. Everyone advanced. There is no one to say goodbye to. It is odd that all participants, at this point in the season, would select the same team. CIN carried everyone forward to Week 15.

Week 13 Summary

There were only two losers again this week. Say goodbye to Dewey Edgar and my Mom's #2 entry. Both lost when AZ beat STL at STL. You know it's getting tough to pick a team when you have to settle on STL. My Mom squander her opportunity to win it all. If you remember she had two picks alive in the Champion bracket just four short weeks ago. Now she has one pick remaining in the Second Place bracket.

There are still two in contention for the championship. George Melissinos and Mike Gilbert.

Thirteen remain in contention for Second Place. There are four entries who played the default pick every week and are still alive for second. Riding the default has never lead to a pay out so we'll see what happens this year. The default this week is CIN over OAK by 10.5.

For those who remain, your pick is due Thursday if you are playing the Thursday night game. Otherwise Sunday morning is the due date/time.
